It probably operates like other external tools. You can open "with
Lightroom Edits" or something like that. It creates a TIFF file of the
selected image which is processed by the external tool. When you close
that external tool the result is saved in the created TIFF file with
some form of name adjustment. I do this all the time with
ColorEfexPro.

I dunno. In the work I've just been doing and showing, some photos would have a string of TIFFs if I worked that way. In PS, I have a pile of layers, which I can then modify with opacity and/or masks, combine, delete, etc. Seems far less hassle and more powerful to me. Spitting out web images for roll-over displays is MUCH easier, too.

While it doesn't appear to be the most elegant solution in the world,
what it does do is maintain maximum compatibility with other tools and
DAM software.

I don't see where doing it in PS, from LR, and saving the PSD is any less 
compatible?
