Sometimes we just need to be more open, I have been using film scanner (just
happen they were all N*kon) since 1993.

I use N*kon Scan exclusively for slides, the color accuracy is better than
Vuescan, a little dull but easily corrected in post.

For negative I mix between Vuescan and N*kon Scan since 1999, Vuescan has
better flexibility and N*kon Scan looks very commercial (like one hour lab
print) and ok for most non fade negatives. I used to use Vuescan for the old
fade negatives for its flexibility in post adjustment but now I use it for
all negatives.

I found the color accuracy of negative is excellent (no matter Kodak or
Fuji, the professional one or commercial one), I don't use Vuescan's
built-in color profile (film profile), it just makes thing worse so I just
leave it at "Generic" "Color". I also don't use any Color Balance and just
leave it at "None", under these settings one must correct the tone (not
color) of every scan, this is the only adjustment required for non faded
negatives and it takes less than one minute for me.

I have made over thirty thousands scans for that many years and the last
twenty thousands were made in these two years. It is a shame to say I just
got vast improvement on scan and post processing since few months ago so I
have to re-scan all my old negatives again.

No matter how good your monitor is and how experience you say you have with
Vuescan, if the image doesn't come out as you wanted, there is something you
need to improve. You can't blame Vuescan as it is only a tool, there are
thousands of ways to work with it.
