Catholics were rarer than rocking horse droppings where I was raised  
and those that were around were Irish and regarded with suspicion for  
that, rather than kicking with the wrong foot. Sort of like gypsies  
but more annoying.
Of course Australia is different as many of the convicts were Irish  
political prisoners - it's still about a third Catholic and they were  
handy for discrimination targets in small towns before more visible  
targets immigrated. That accounts for the large numbers who turned up  
to see the Pope at a racecourse the other day at the quaintly named  
World Youth Day. Odd to have a 'global' event where only one group  
are represented.
I'm not aware of the 'tradition' - if it's some form of Christian  
thing, I'm puzzled.
Was Christ nailed up by the ear lobes? :-)
