I have a 12 year old border collie with a cataract. I have been told that vets

that your experience Greg? Mike
Mike,
There would be a number of variables to consider, including the individual
dog's health status. Age is definitely a factor, i.e. suitability for general
anesthesia and expected life span. It's easier to justify the surgery on a
younger dog. Cataract surgery in dogs is not as routine as it is in humans.
This is a pretty good explanation of why cataract surgery is more difficult in
dogs than in
humans:https://oftalmouniversity.com/blog/2025/04/18/beyond-species-key-differences-between-human-and-veterinary-cataract-surgery/Recovery
is definitely a consideration, too. Dogs will not "take it easy" like humans
do, and they can't do their own eye drops. HTH,Greg
