As a veterinarian, I had few patients whose owners were willing to
fork out the money for cataract surgeries for their pets, but I
always recommended an ophthalmologist exam when cataracts started to
become visible, because once they're dense, you can no longer see
the retina. Same concept, ophthalmologist is recommending a scan now
to get a baseline before it's harder to see back there.
At the point where my surgeon told me, "that cataract needs operating
on NOW", my optometrist had no problem taking an OCT scan of the eye.
She is though an outstanding practitioner and invests in equipment
more advanced than many of the surgeons have. It's amazing the detail
that the OCT shows.
