As Tennessee residents for most of the last 50 years, I, too, would like to
respond. In 1966, we spent about half the year in the Orlando area. One
evening, as we were returning to a motel room, my wife suddenly grabbed one
of my sons just before he stepped on a coral snake. After we moved into a
house and got the kids enrolled in school, we were invited to join other
parents on a Saturday morning for a snake hunt on the school grounds. One
morning as the kids arrived at the school, there was a rattlesnake blocking
the entrance.
Never venture into the palmetto growth of Florida without snakeproof boots.
