I think it's not a good assumption about the lens.  This particular lens 
has a pretty good weighted MTF score (3.6) on Photodo tests and 
performance is relatively even across all focal lengths.  Not up to the 
50/1.4 but probably good enough for this test.  And even if the 3200 dpi 
scanner was only delivering 2400 dpi perfromance it should just about 
equal the D30's resolution.
