Are you sure shutter is open?  Sounds like the dreaded shutter lock where
the mirror is up but shutter does not open.  Next time it does this, take
lens off and see if first curtain pattern is showing.
Usually if the shutter is locked "open", pushing the meter switch up to
"reset" will not have an affect.  It will only reset the shutter if mirror
is up, shutter not open (pattern showing).
Shutter lock can be caused by alkaline or lithium batteries.  Shutter "open"
is another set of problems, sometimes caused by bad brushes or a bad ASA
ceramic.
