The only technology that makes sense cost-wise is pumped hydro (not pumped air). The problem there is that it requires massive elevated, natural landscape features to hold the water. You won't find any of that in Iowa. I visited the one in/on Racoon Mtn. in Tennessee. Kinda cool. Nice hike in the woods on top, too.
