Bob, I, like you, have filtered my news watching down to selected channels, and weather presentations factored into that. I was not drawn to the sexy weather gals on FOX.

Our local garbage wrapper has had a couple of stories in the past week on a meth dealer roundup that resulted from a joint task force activity over the past six months. We live in a small county with two small towns, but sit astride I-24 between Atlanta and Nashville. Atlanta is a hotbed of drug activity. One of our "locals" had an Atlanta connection, and made frequent trips there to bring back drugs, especially meth. If I recall the numbers, the indictments included about 65 dealers that were distributing these drugs throughout the community. I think they had about 50 in custody, and were still rounding them up. Some were turned over to the Feds on federal charges. This type of news, and the Obituaries, where I frequently find my old acquaintances, are my excuses for continuing to read the newspaper.

PS: I do not mean to imply that all of our meth is imported. Our county has been shown to have one of the higher rates of meth production in the state, despite having one of the lowest unemployment levels.

Understood. But just fast-forwarding through the commercials doesn't
protect you from the for-profit aspect of today's news business. The entire
content and emphasis (slant, if you will) is generated with ratings in
mind. And let's not even being to talk about the lack of depth to go along
with the lack of perspective.

I quit watching local news years ago except on snow winter mornings when I
want to see the latest forecast. I've watched all three stations' weather
enough to know which one is the most consistent. As for the news, I get it
from the Portland newspaper, which is where the tv stations usually get
their's as well. <g>

There is one magazine I see from time to time, I think it's The Week, which
is a kind of digest of news and opinion that I've been favorably impressed
with the few times I've seen it.

I am not as "well informed" as I used to be, and that's a good thing. At
least I think it is.

The world your children and grandchildren live in every day is the world
they live in every day, not necessarily the world you see on television.

That said, we are old poops and set in our ways. I used to read Time every
week. And then Newsweek. And then U.S. News. As best I can tell, they're
all tabloid crap these days. But that's just me.

This list is a much more sane place to live. <g>

Bob, I see your point, but I'm not one to put my head in the sand. I WANT
to know what is going on around me.

I watch a half-hour news show from Nashville, to get local perspective,
and a half-hour NBC evening news show, both recorded so I can skip
commercials. I read the Sunday-Wed-Fri local newspaper, what is left of
it. And I read TIME and FORBES from cover to cover. I watch breaking
stories on the internet. I consider this time well spent. This is the
world that my children and grandchildren must live in every day.

For sanity, I spend time on these lists, where I can get different
perspectives from all around the world.

And, I shoot and process photos. That helps keep me mentally sharp.
