Understood. But just fast-forwarding through the commercials doesn't
protect you from the for-profit aspect of today's news business. The entire
content and emphasis (slant, if you will) is generated with ratings in
mind. And let's not even being to talk about the lack of depth to go along
with the lack of perspective.

I quit watching local news years ago except on snow winter mornings when I
want to see the latest forecast. I've watched all three stations' weather
enough to know which one is the most consistent. As for the news, I get it
from the Portland newspaper, which is where the tv stations usually get
their's as well. <g>

There is one magazine I see from time to time, I think it's The Week, which
is a kind of digest of news and opinion that I've been favorably impressed
with the few times I've seen it.

I am not as "well informed" as I used to be, and that's a good thing. At
least I think it is.

The world your children and grandchildren live in every day is the world
they live in every day, not necessarily the world you see on television.

That said, we are old poops and set in our ways. I used to read Time every
week. And then Newsweek. And then U.S. News. As best I can tell, they're
all tabloid crap these days. But that's just me.

This list is a much more sane place to live. <g>
