My hiking is far from as serious as yours, but I feel the same way.

Possibly the OM-D EM-1+ 12-50mm are up to the challenge - comments welcome.
Sure. But the EM5 is a lot cheaper + smaller lighter. Nor is the PD-AF a big plus with micro 4:3 lenses.12-50 is good but not stellar.

As I just said, I'd likely go for the E-M10 these days. Does away with the need
for a noticeable shutter delay.

For small and light, the Panny GM1 & 5 blow everything else away. First quality µ4/3 sensor in a tiny body. But they bring another lens problem as they don't have IS in their tiny bodies. The GM1 with kit 12-32 is a mighty fine camera. I also swapped my Oly 40-150, which Paul has been enjoying, for the Panny 45-150 with in lens IS.

Panny has since come out with a smaller, lighter 35-100 lens, but I like the 150 mm long end. A GM camera and two lens kit would make a great backpacking kit. The GM5 adds an EVF.

I've been very happy with the 12-50. But then I'm evaluating after
deconvolution, which probably makes a difference.

I don't know why you'd buy the very expensive 12-40/2.8 to do landscape
photography.
Me neither unless the image quality was a big step up. At nearly twice the weight of the 12-50 it would have to be a BIG step up. Although some friends are hiking with it on the EM1.

As Brian pointed out, the M1 is very little heavier than the M5, but looks
larger.

Dollar-wise, the E-M5 with the 14-140 might be a possible solution. It's a
nice lens.
Not wide enough and the 4:3 18-180 left a sour taste in my mouth.

Don't hold on to the past! :-) As to wide, I do like the extra WA, but for the kind of landscape I see from you ( such beautiful places!), hand held panoramas work great. Even the (tiny, almost weightless) M.Z 9-18 is sometimes not wide enough.

And I don't shoot at the long end of that range much. Perhaps part of the problem with the 18-180 was the temptation to hand-hold at and the long, dim end. May be less of an issue with less undesirable Oly 14-150.

I got a lot of great shots with it at the long end. But then, my preferred aperture is f8 anyway and out in the sun that's great.

For me the lowly 40-150 is just fine for the occasional reach.
for phase defect AF......but may make a huge difference for those with 4/3
lenses.
True and may be a deciding factor when you do the math. the 4:3 lenses on the
EM5 are only marginally useful.

I can't imagine I would have the patience ...

As I suggested, the E-M1 and adapter may be a better solution for Brian.
Perhaps, at least starting with an Exxx. Not so much starting with an EM5. I have to balance the price to upgrade to the EM1 vs just selling the 4:3 lenses and purchasing µ4:3. Anyone looking for a 4:3 9-18?

I'm glad not to have that to decide about.

The E-M1 has a higher resolution EVF and what I consider some ergonomic
improvements
And I consider the redesign to bigger, heavier a step backwards. I don't think that the annoyances of the EM5 were addressed in the EM1 anyway. Probably the main thing that keeps the EM1 off of my wish list. The Sony is way more attractive.

Which annoyances would those be? The GX7 is the same size/weight, but has different foibles than the E-M5. Takes the same lenses and pictures. Has EFC and a nice silent mode.

Personally, with two fine 'big' bodies in hand and the GM1, I'm sitting back, waiting to see if there's an E-M6 and/or GX8, and what they bring to the table.

Choices, Choices Moose
