Jim,
I know there was specific lens for specific purpose in 18xx. I take Petzval
lens as it's a portrait lens. I found my APO-Symmar 180mm is not good for
portrait, too sharp & contrasty. I asked for a good portrait lens for 4x5
shots, my professional photographer friend introduced Petzval brass lens to
me. I understood there are many brass lenses for other purpose, such as
landscape. But I'd prefer to take landscape with modern lenses since with a
bigger cover of image for movement. As a larger format shooter, I enjoy the
movement to rectify the perspective distortion.

You're right, there is surprised for these old gear.

Here is some samples with APO-Symmar 180mm portrait shots, I think they are
too "digital" :(
