I'm sure Ag has probably stressed the dust thing more than
me. I guess that if dust were really such a problem, more people
would be complaining. I just haven't found any real difference
between my E-1 and my 5D. Maybe it is just the way people
treat their gear. Have you ever purchased used lenses off yabe,
and when you open the box and find it reeks of cigarettes?
No dust shaker in the world is going to help a camera from
such a place. The particulate matter that comes after someone
has smoked is 40-50 times higher than a non-smoker. It was
an issue with workers in clean rooms at the semiconductor fabs.

The dust actually accumulates on the anti-alias filter, so it doesn't
show up like it does with film scanning. The dust is out of focus.
The shutter mechanism also blocks dust. I wonder, if the mirror
box just contained dust collectors, if that would go a long way to
reducing dust. We had vacuum backs for film, maybe we need
mini vacuum filters in the mirror box? Also I think some people
are designing nanotech dust mites that periodically go out and
clean the sensors:

They have special fresnel shells to appear invisible if they happen
to be wondering the sensor when a picture is being taken. And special
feet designed to use the anti-alias grating to traverse the sensor.
Just notice the minimal shadow cast by this experimental prototype
shows how effective the fresnel shell is.

Oh, and also there is the new shutter wiper, that runs a mini-squeegee
across the sensor every time the shutter is tripped. The dust is then
whisked away by the mini-vac.

So, a brand new camera, never opened, start out with dust, including
the E-1. So thinking you will never have dust on the E-1 sensor is not
necessarily true. But new technology is on the way to help with
this dirty matter. If knowing the E-1 has a dust shaker makes you
feel better, great. But all the evidence I have heard is anecdotal.
I just think the dust shaker is over-rated. I'd much rather have an
anti-shaker sensor than a dust shaker sensor.
