I'll do multiple steps on pictures that have converging lines
which will suffer from aliasing problems--especially true when
downsizing. However, this 10% step thing is a load of bunk.
Mine are best if I do two, maybe three steps using really odd
midsteps which don't give me the aliasing problems.
In my experience, PWP gives better scaling for print, but not as
good as Photoshop for screen display or analysis. The algorithm
in THE GIMP is actually pretty good and I usually use that
unless there is converging lines.
PWP has outstanding tools for cropping, vignetting and adding
borders to portraits. Also each process creates a new copy of
the image in the editor. Easy to compare or backup and try
something different. It does very well at B&W conversionn to.
I want a new JGC SRT8. Not only will it keep pace with Walt's
buggies in a straight line, but it'll take the shortcuts too!
