The E-1 seems to be at least as rugged as an OM. The possible exception is
dust. As Walt and others have pointed out film cleans itself every time. My
teenage daughter got sand in her 3040 which jammed within 20 minutes of
visiting a Santa Barbara beach. My E-1 didn't even pick up any grinding
noises.

The only OM lenses I've had on the E-1 are long telephotos. The little image
is not as pleasing as an OM. However it was pretty easy to focus a Tamron
400 f4 + D.Zuiko 1.4x. at my son's graduation ceremony. The 14-54 is a very
useful lens...but then I also use 35-xx zooms heavily with my OMs. You'll
probably want the OM for wide angles, even the 11-22 isn't all that wide.
For backpacking the E-1 would be fine but it probably wouldn't do anything
you couldn't do at least as well with an OM and 20 rolls of film. To be
honest I will probably leave the E-1 home if I'm on a trip where I'm just
shooting landscapes.

When shooting inside homes using auto color balance can be pretty
unpredictable. It don't think it takes any more effort than scanning slides
though to get a good image. If you account for dust issues with slides the
E-1 is much quicker. If you are methodical to work out a good color work
flow the E-1 shouldn't be a time consumer.
