It can do multi-spot readings, but only spot readings of what the
camera is pointed at. So you have to aim the camera around to take the
readings. If the camera is fixed on a tripod with the framing you want,
and you have not done your metering yet, you will have to move the
camera. Which is unfortunate in the situation where the light is
changing. The next best thing is to do the multi-spot reading, compare
that to regular auto exposure, then use auto-exposure with compensation
to match the result of spot metering. That way you have the benefit of
tracking the changes in lighting. (I also recommend using the memo
function to capture the actual exposure and compare it to the metered
one, just as a double check on consistency.) I'm still bummed that the
E-1 does not do multi-spot metering....
