Always check used equipment over thoroughly before buying, of course.
To check lenses, turn all the rings all the way from one stop to the
other -- they should turn easily, without binding or grinding. Look it
over closely for any dents or "dings" on the barrels. Gently try to
"wiggle" the lens to see if there's any play in the barrel.

On the rear of the lens are two tabs -- one that will move as you turn
the aperture ring, and another that is used to close the diaphragm to
the setting on the aperture ring. Move that lever to close the
diaphragm then let it open -- do this at several aperture settings. The
diaphragm should spring open and closed quickly, without hesitation. If
the diaphragm is slow or sluggish, pass the lens by.

Look into the lens from the front and rear, not just at the front pieces
of glass ("elements"), but deeper inside, too. If any of the glass
looks rainbow-like, or mirror-like, or cloudy, pass it by. Lenses will
also sometimes develop fungus growths on the glass that will usually
look like spider webs or spots with hairy rings -- another reason to
leave the lens behind.
