Hi William,
I think simple is best to begin with. I suggest 50mm lens and one type of
film. Probably something simple and inexpensive(but still looks good), like
Kodak Gold 200, so you can justify experimentation. I also suggest using
the camera in manual mode at least part of the time (that model does have
manual mode, I think), so you can better experience the relationship between
shutter speed and aperture. Also, I find it very important to take notes.
This way, you can look at your pictures alongside your notes and actually
see the difference between the same subject taken at shutterspeed of 1/60 @
f/8, versus 1/500 @ f2.8, for example. Doing this is a hard habit to get in
to, but very helpful. You'll be able to remember what did and didn't work
for the subjects you like to shoot. You can focus in on film selection
after you get a better idea of what subjects and conditions (indoors or out,
bright sun, overcast, window light, flash) interest you. Personally, I
shoot tons of black and white and love it. Just my 2 cents worth.
