All,
Thanks for all the great advice regarding an alternative long lens.
I'm glad a fair number of you have gone down this road. I knew there
would be plenty of advice, but I am definitely surprised by some of the
results. Also the diversity of this group has brought many ideas I had
not considered.
From what I have read about telescopes the number one thing to look for
is aperture. I was hoping 5" or 6" of aperture might overcome the
inherent drawbacks compared to a camera lens with a 70mm to 80mm filter
size. I was very surprised to hear the images from a C-11 SCT to be
"FLAT" This is a very high quality scope. I guess the limitations of
contrast and/or relatively short focusing distances are much worse for
terrestrial viewing. Would the big dollar refractors function well as a
telephoto lens? I understand the slow focus type issues that are
compromises for astro work but is the idea of using a telescope as a
lens just too much to ask for?
I have been avoiding a specific cost range to leave the field as open
as possible. I'm hoping to find a good alternative to multi thousand
glass for less than $750. Maybe I will just have to look for a decent
Novoflex setup, quality mirror lens or save up my pennies and just get
the Zuiko 400mm. From Gary Reese's tests the Novoflex is looking really
good, if rare.
Thanks again to all who have contributed so far, maybe there is a
clever trick out there yet.
