First, an article I read indicated that they could slip the shutter
linkage under the mirror box, and thus save space and mechanical
complexity.  

However, I used an OM-10 with manual adapter, so don't know much
about how it actually handled.  It always "felt right" in the store,
and I DO find I need to pull the camera away from my eye and look at
the shutter speed dial on my current SLR (not an Oly).

Second, I always liked the aperture control being far away since it
makes it easier to disinguish from everything else.  Your hand is
there for focusing anyways.
