Does anyone know why the Oly shutter speed control was designed to be a
ring around the lens rather than a dial somewhere else?  It has always
seemed an awkward feature of an otherwise perfect camera...

I guess it's all what you are used to -- I think it's a wonderful ergonomic improvement over the traditional "knob on top" design.

Most people who object to it aren't holding their camera optimally. Rest the bottom of the camera in the palm of your left hand, and your thumb and first finger very easily and naturally adjust the shutter speed. It's the folks you see focusing with their palm outward who have trouble with the shutter speed ring.
