Charlie,
  Olympus has something similar - it's called the F280!  The problem is
that the longer actual time you are providing light, the longer you
require tremendous amounts of energy.  Electronic flash puts out
considerable light, but only for a short time.  The T32, for example,
flash duration is between 1/1000 - 1/40,000 sec.
