I showed these two images once before:

Some artifacts from sharpen AI granted.
The shot was with A7R4 and 24-105/4 lens at 105mm. The second is a 100% crop of
the first image. The fact I can get this with one lens rather than schlepping a
big telephoto makes a difference on a long hike. Resolution and overall
sharpness matters in this case.
I carry the big lens, anyway; because next to this

is this <https://photos.app.goo.gl/m7Y8upDybNrztCF29>

and on the same walk are this <https://photos.app.goo.gl/mG15yWjSG7WnuLpx9>

and this. <https://photos.app.goo.gl/6GY48v7PUgjuVvWU9>

It's all about being there
With the right gear! 😁

I can agree. With the big lens there is stuff I just would not get otherwise. On
this easy hike I had the 100-400mm for instance.

But doing a really strenuous hike it can become much to carry, as much as I
would like to have it.

I have an extremely simple solution to this problem. I don't go on such hikes. 😉

Also bike riding it is best to have a smaller system.

Don't do that, either.  Especially the kind you do. 😁

For me it depends on what my intention is. My main point was the advantage of
resolution at times. There are a lot of advantages of having a long lens for
landscape also. Just not on a hike where I'm doing good just to make it back to
the car.

As to resolution, there is a high percentage of photography where 20-24mpx is
plenty, and I still think some of my 12mpx 5D is enough.

Yes, and yes. Lots of 5D photos that are great and more than sufficient for
good sized prints.

Stuff we share here is generally 2mpx or less (1200x1600).

I have thought hard about the A7S iii for low noise, even though it is 12mpx.

I guess I don't shoot in the dark much. With Topaz Denoise at the ready, noise
just hasn't been a problem lately.

Not sure I am so interested in the video though. But a lot of photography can
be done at 12mpx.

Agreed, I mostly like more MPs for cropping shots of small things that I can't
get big enough on the sensor.

I find it wonderful there is so much one can explore these days with
photography.

Ever so true. And not just on the bigger sensor and more MPs trail. I've just been processing some shots with the 1" sensor ZS200 big pocket camera. Damn they are good, blowing away all the many pocket cameras I've had. Then there's the joys and frustrations of 1,100 mm eq.

Judging what is best is just narrowing ones view. Please don't take any of my
opinions as anything other than me musing.

Yup, nope.
