Thanks, Philippe. Since I am now using LR, which shows my RAW images as DNGs, I have decided to follow Nathan's example and shoot RAW only, except for the iPhone. That way, any jpegs that show up are those I created in LR.

Jim,

I think you're making real progress, BRAVO!

Just a warning, when you "re-export" the now LR processed JPEG, pay
careful attention to rename it as I think you might have trouble with
duplicates IF you usually shoot JPEG AND RAW, the original in camera
JPEG might still be there, and conflicting names will result.

I personnally delete any in-camera JPEG when I'm sure the RAW (turned
into DNG) are there. And never re-export back to the original folder.

Thanks, Piers. As I began to understand LR, I realized exactly what you
are saying. I have set up a number of Collections, and populated
several of these with imported images, just to get a feel for the
structure. I can add new images as I produce them, and add more
collections if necessary.

My new images are initially stored in my original file structure, then
imported into LR. Any edited images from LR that I wish to post, etc.,
are exported to the same file structure. I'm gradually getting the hang
of it! :-)

Jim, STOP!

In this respect, you have missed the single biggest advantage of LR (which
is, as far as I am aware, unique to LR). IT isn't just an image editor, it
is an image management database too. You do not need to change any of your
existing file structure, just leave your images where they are ("import"
them into LR so as to give LR the information it needs to find them, of
course) and then start to use LR keywords to classify the images. By all
means use Family, Little League, Airport, Skydiving, Pretty, Boys, Girls
in as many combinations as you please for each image. The beauty of this
approach is that it is infinitely flexible and can be modified, expanded,
developed as your needs evolve. And unlike a classification using the PC
file/folder structure, it is multi-dimensional. You are not forced to
choose whether a given image is an "Airport" image or a "Pretty Girl"
image - give that image all three keywords, and you can later search for
images meeting the "Pretty" and "Girl" criteria. Or "Airport" and "Girl".
Or...

This is certainly not the time to start restructuring your hierarchy of
files and folders - use LR to its most advantage!

Piers

Thanks for sharing your insights, Philippe. I am getting ready to
attempt to select a file structure that fits my picture taking habits,
i.e., Family, Little League, Airport, Skydiving, maybe even Pretty
Girls. :-)

Three steps

I often rename e.g. « 2016-Xmas-file nb » - LR can do that
semi-automatically, just type in the « prefix » and let the file number -
there are other options but I like this one best

I let LR create its folders the way it wants, by dates, and find it
convenient since it works fine - the itch is when you have several
cameras not all set to the accurate date and time - but this issue can
also be addressed after the upload, automatically (how do I know? I
edited the photos from a dozen not-synchronized cameras when I last got
married … )

And most importantly, you can, should, must use keywords on import - e.g.
" holidays, Portugal, Sintra » . Thus, whatever the date, I can find all
the photos I shot In Portugal in a second, whatever the day they were
shot, or restrict my quest to a specific place, Sintra, etc.

In any case, the camera used will be recorded too, and it may sometimes
be useful to make a query this way too.

Hope this helps.

One of the tutorials I watched this afternoon made a point of explaining
that a three-day assignment, with files split into three folders by
date, was a bad thing. He always used a subject name instead of date.

Correction. The directory dates are not based on import date, but file
date. So if you shoot over a three day period of time, when you import
them, Lightroom will sort them into three directories. If you want, of
course.

This is a good thing, Martha. Unless, of course, you have a camera
that the clock resets itself to some crazy date like 6/1/2077. Don't
ask my how I know that.
