If I had my druthers, I'd get a 1991 RX7 Convertible. But there are
three reasons why I am likely not to:
1. Safety standards. The doors have substandard side-impact
protection. This is the primary reason why they had to discontinue the
2nd generation body was because of safety standards.
2. Electrical issues. The Mazdas from that era are experiencing
significant issues with solder joints and tin whiskers. Mine was
developing problems long before it could even be considered "old".
3. Not enough Oomph. I don't think I would be satisfied with a vehicle
that was so significantly slower than my SUV.
But there is something about the RX7 and the older 3-series cars--you
can toss them around. They are lightweight and pivot well. I like
that. If I just wanted 1/4 mile times, I'd buy an ugly Mustang.
