Earl Grey - you have to watch those vowels, Bob! But otherwise, agreed 100%.
You made me think - I never use the term "whisky", it's almost always "a
Laphroaig", "an Ardbeg" or whatever, that they are single malt Scotch
whiskies is redundant.

Piers - who has taken tea at Howick Hall, the ancestral home of the Earls
Grey. I paid my £2.50 in the tea room, just like all the other tourists :-)

Hum. I seem to recall that currently, the only correct use of Scotch is in
regard to whisky. Even the venerable Scotch Pine now is called a Scots Pine.

Scotch is not the same as Irish whiskey, or American whiskies, as Piers
notes. For example, I've found that Scotch does not make a particularly
good hot toddy to ease my discomfort when suffering a cold. Jack Daniels,
Earl Gray, honey, and lemon do the trick nicely. I have used blended
Scotch, and it will do, but it's not the same as Jack.

I suppose it would have been more correct to say Scotch blended whisky, but
that would have made me sound like Chris Barker. <g> But then on the other
hand, if Scotch _is_ whisky, then blended Scotch is correct. One might not
even need the whisky afterwards, except to show one knows that no "e" is
required. <wink>

I was familiar with Black Bull by name only, and from looking at Duncan
Taylor's web site. I have never met Euan, but I got properly pissed with
Moji, his wife, at my son's wedding. (The genesis of the long story of the
Black Bull finally arriving in my drinks cabinet.) My son tells me his
understanding is very much the same as Pier's, that Euan apparently is a
master at picking up casks of this, that and the other from all over
Scotland--many from now defunct distilleries--and deciding which to blend
with what and in what proportion. I can testify that to my particular
palate, Black Bull far surpasses any other blended whisky I've tasted.

Oh, and Canadians make whisky, too.
