Unfortunately, there are still some developers (including at one of my two banks) that continue to code to Microsoft "standards" rather than web standards. That requires keeping IE around for occasional use.

But that same bank (where we've been doing business for 30 years) did something yesterday to really irk us. I may solve at least one IE problem by getting rid of the bank.

I hope, Chris, that nothing on the Internet requires anything
Microsoft. It’s probably a slip of the keyboard in this post, but I
don’t think that you *need* IE (any version) for any Internet
facility. MS was late to the Internet party and with IE6 tried to
impose MS standards on the browsing public, but now there are too
many decent browsers available for IE to have the influence that once
it might have done.

As time goes on, more websites are incorporationg features that
require Win7+ and IE9+. But, I can access them all with Firefox
without having to abandon WinXP, and now Firefox lets me keep using
Win98/SE for webmail access. Neither Win7+ or Linux will let me
use my older engineering software, so those are not an option. I
do have an extra hard drive for the laptop with Win7, but it has
trouble working with the laptop as the hardware is designed for
WinXP.
