My first Canon compact, the S110 (of 11 years ago, not the new one coming soon) 
had no MF function, you had to lock 
focus with a half press.

All since, A710IS, A650IS, G11 and (new) S100 have the magnified center for MF 
focus available, so it's clearly common 
on Canon compacts. By available, I mean it can be turned on and off in the 
menus. On the S100 (and G12, I'd guess), it 
can be assigned to the front control ring, just like an MF lens, well, sorta as 
it clicks to fixed settings. ;-)

Even with a high resolution LCD, though, I sometimes find it difficult to focus 
with certainty. I think it's only about 
5x, and somehow less effective than the full LCD 5x on the 60D, let alone 10x. 
Probably works better on a tripod, I suppose.

Still, much better than MF on the Sammy, with no magnification at all. :-)
