Darin,
You are not missing something. When you split the center column and just use
the upper portion on the tripod, you can go to ground level. I found on a
couple of occasions it was a bit troublesome to get just a little bit more
elevation at that low level because of slippage in the legs when splayed out at
the extreme angles (the feet don't have anything to bite with). So I bought the
small column. It just wasn't practical. Plus when you did need to go right
down to the ground, that shorter column doesn't split like the normal column, so
you can't go all the way down. That's why I said it wasn't worth it.
You did much better on your purchase than I did. But would you still buy a
Bogen 3021 if you paid B&H pricing?
