Common usage varies a lot, even around this country. What you describe
would seem bizarre to many in the US. Leaving postal issues alone, I
imagine following instructions to your house at night, and giving up
after the second or third wrong house with the right number.

Many US city numbering systems simply assign a series of 100 to a block,
even if there are only a couple of houses. In a rid layout area, it is
then possible to know where any address is on one axis simply from the name.

In some places, greater Seattle and Greater Salt Lake City come to mind,
streets and roads are numbered with a system such that the address alone
identifies the quadrant of the city, block and side of the street of the
house in the grid. In both cases, the numbering system from the original
city has been continued far out into the suburbs. Highly logical - and
disturbs the anarchist in me.

I'm in an area of winding, hilly streets, many quite short. The longer
ones roughly conform to the numbering pattern of the flats below.. I and
a neighbor about 1/4 mile away used to regularly get each other's mail,
because, although on different named streets, they flow more or less
together and the house numbers are the same.

The current delivery persons are doing a pretty good job lately.
