Has the mirror locked up on the Om1? I'm assuming u know Olympus cameras -
but maybe not - they 'suffer' from mirror lock up if the battery runs too
slow - which has led many a new OM owner to think the camera is poorly. It
is an intentional design feature (and not unique to the OM system), design
to protect your film (and maybe camera too). Never having owned an OM1 I
can't remember if it has the OM2's handy 'reset' button (at the bottom
corner of the mount) - if no button, just put new batteries in anyway and
take a shot. When the mirror locks up due to insufficient battery power,
it's impossible to take another picture until you put in new batteries,
unless its an OM2 SP, say, which has usable mechanical speeds of B and 1/60s
- even with no batteries in! Mind you, the OM2 SP needs it because it can be
battery hungry. If the power drops too low when you've just taken a shot and
are winding on - the behaviour you described can be exhibited (which made me
blink when it happened on my OM40). But a fresh set of batteries and away
you go.
As regards the frame counter - you might find a motor winder (rather than a
power winder) on eB*y and that has an LCD frame counter as well as giving a
nice 5 fps and motorised film rewind.
It's also designed to work with the 250 film back and the LCD keeps track
when you're using bulk film too). One went on eB*y (UK) recently. I know its
not as good a solution as getting the OM1 working properly again, but it is
one possible solution. The Om20 is a bit plasticly (is that a word?) - but
will take excellent photos - and is preferable to an OM10 or the awful OM30.
It's the best double OM after the OM40.
Allan

PS No trees were harmed in the sending of this message and a very large
number of electrons were asked their permission to be terribly
inconvenienced. (And threw a party for them afterwards for being really cool
about it).

Disrupting the unnatural balance that you, as a conscious human being and a
confused mass of energy, have created.
