Chuck, you're right enough, it didn't work too well.
So I made a selection, feathered it, desaturated it, darkened it down in
levels. Then applied a contrast/lightness adjustment to very dark grey.
Of course, I then binned it, without saving. So you'll have to take my
word for it..! ;-)
I find it usually works pretty well for small prints and web images,
though. Extra refinements are obviously necessary for bigger images and
vain persons...
