I just saw a video overview here:

  http://av.adobe.com/russellbrown/LightroomSM.mov

It is very obvious that it is aimed at Aperture from the dialogue.
People have tried to explain away the Mac only beta with the
reasoning that it is designed only to work on Vista which has not
come out yet. I doubt they would limit their market so severely. They
are trying to cut Apple off at the pass. They repeatedly stress how
quickly Lightroom runs on ordinary hardware not something exotic that
has not come out yet and also the relational database which allows
you to keep your images anywhere unlike Aperture which is like iPhoto
in requiring storage inside the application database. I have not
heard anything about printing in Aperture, but since the video also
concentrates on the ease of printing "compared to the competition", I
would guess aperture is not great in that department either. Much of
the demo is aimed squarely at the weaknesses of Aperture.

Another video says that it has been in development since 2002 and
shows a Kai Soap like early interface. I doubt that since there are
so many basic features still missing "to be added very soon". There
may have been a germ of an idea, but not focussed until just recently.

Interesting. I guess the success of Final Cut Pro scared some people.
