1) The fact that they probably aren't idiots (my assumption too) means they
are probably trying to use a measure that applies to both film and sensors
and allows comparison.
2) Because a line pair requires two pixels to sense, (1) implies that two of
these Lines make up a line pair - otherwise they wouldn't match up with
pixels.
3) The color neg film was rated at 2400 => 100 Lines/mm => 50 lp/mm.

Anyway, the point is that if you take some kind of value for a good slide
film under real-life contrast (say by interpolating between low and high
contrast) it still has some edge - please excuse the pun. That's also borne
out by real-life prints I've seen. And the point of that? I'll be buying a
serious digital camera sometime, but my wallet's in no danger of friction
burns. I don't see any need for a hurry.*

* I do like the quick feedback, but a P&S gives me that.
