Well, I agree it may be picking at nits, but isn't that part of what we
do here? In an 8x12 print, this piece would be about 1.3x1.5 in portion.
Perhaps by then, and certainly by 11x16, the difference is edge contrast
and general texture/tone would be apparent. I'm not saying one would be
better than another, but the difference would be apparent.

There is certainly a difference in the 2 images. The effect of the ICE
is partially like a really good grain reducer, but without as much
effect on detail. Sharpening the with ICE image does indeed make it
pretty close in detail/sharpness to the without. On the other hand,
significantly less sharpening of the without image doesn't bring the
grain up much and gives a sharper look than the sharpened with. Adding
local conrast enhancement further perks up apparent sharpness in both,
although the without image again needs less and ends up still somehow
seeming sharper. Looking at details, I can't really say one or the other
is sharper, but sitting back to see the whole image at once, there is
still a difference that's very difficult to describe.

Leaving aside visibility of detail alone, there is a much sharper 'look'
to the without image, which I suppose is accutance, apparent sharpness
from a combination of contrast and resolution down at the grain level.
This might relate to the difference AG and Walt attribute to film vs.
digital. One of them, or somebody here, refers to it as looking like it
is taken underwater.

Again, I'm not saying one is better than another, just that they are
different. Which looks better in a print could easily depend on printer
model, driver, paper, ink, etc. and personal preferences.

C.H.,thanks for the excellent samples to play with. It makes it clear
that the effect of ICE is more subtle and complex than just a loss of
sharpness and likely is different with different films. I've learned a
lot more from this than from all the reviews I've read.
