I absolutely do not understand this reasoning - which I know has been
adopted by several people.
For THIS camera, this is a 600 mm lens. It is not an old 300 cobbled
onto an E-1. It is a new len, designed specifically for the camera, that
provides a magnified view equal to that of a 600 on a 35 mm camera.
Given that, it is downright cheap for a 600 2.8, and it is competitive
even if considered a 300 2.8.

The only price I saw that really raised an eyebrow for me was the price
of the 300/2.8. Yes, it's effectively a 600/2.8 but optically it's still
a 300mm lens and should be somewhere in that price range, not that of a
600mm. If I buy a C*n*n digital I can buy a 300mm lens and get an
effective 480mm lens (1.6 multiplier right?) but I only pay for a 300mm
lens.
Not a big deal for me though since I've only once used a 400mm length
(200mm with 2x) so I don't have a big need myself for a 300mm lens let
alone a 600mm.
