With both of my Tamron lenses it is just a detent. I can turn past it either direction. It can be handy to set a desired focus and easily get back to it after either focusing further or closer.

So I guess I better check that it doesn't restrict focus to infinity and
lock it down. Seems like another of those things to keep track of like
the exposure compensation dial.
