More on the 300/2.8 Tamron and the little knob:

I have assumed that we have been talking about the same version of
this lens, the greenish-gray one, not the earlier black one or the
current white one.

The knob on mine may well be brass, but it is completely black and
unmarred. I had assumed it was of the same material as the knob
on the tripod collar. I suppose I could nick it with a file to
see if there's brass underneath the black. But I think not, at
least not today.

As for the detent, on my lens it is quite pronounced, unmistakable
except in instances of great haste or excitement. Just how strong
it is depends on how much you tighten the knob, even to the point
of having the full stop I described that allows focusing closer,
but not farther.

My guess is that the difference we're seeing in the way this
mechanism works on different lenses has more to do with wear and
tear than with a change Tamron made in the lens. The serial
number of mine is 8217xx, if that will provide any clue as to
provenance.

I got mine about a year ago, and it obviously had been used very
little and very carefully. I doubt even the most persnickety
purchaser would quibble with a description of "like new" or
even "mint" regarding this lens. The only sign of use on it when
I got it, aside from some very minor wear on the lugs where the
bayonet lens hood attaches, was a tiny, nearly invisible scuff
mark right in front of the rear filter holder slot. If your
lenses show signs of a lot of use, then maybe that's an indication
that this device wears out over time.

Anyway, I wouldn't fret over how well this detent/stop thing
works. Even though mine seems to be fine and dandy, I don't use
it all that often. It's a great lens, and anybody who's got one
should be happy, whatever the color of your knob or how well it
performs.

Walt
