Well, of course you are right. Being close affects only (i) the
amount of "crap" between you and the subject and (ii) the amount of
light reflected by the suject which is absorbed by the medium (the
water). It does not affect the qualities of the light, i.e. if there
is no red or yellow left. 

Still, most subjects interresting and accessible to the casual
diver/swimmer are not really that far down. Much below 10m (of
course, depending on where), and one leaves the "colorful" behind and
enter a more monochromatic landscape -- equally facinating, though
different :)

Still, Mark has a point in that to get "professional grade" UW
photos, good artificial lighting is a must at any depth.

Indeed, very good photos. Where were you and what were the
conditions? (depth, water...)
