Hi Wayne.

I'm not 100ure of the details. I think I heard of this info first on this
list actually... I know there is info on the web about this too but I don't
remember the link. As I remember the story goes like this...

Different types of light sources yield cleaner or noisier results. Polaroid
scanners in particular have received good reviews for lack of noise and this
was attributed to their use of "Cold Cathode" light source vs the LED's that
Nikon use. Since negs generally yield noisier scans than transparencies a
person who plans on scanning mainly negs should look for the scanner with
the least amount of noise.

I use a Nikon SuperCoolscan 4000ED and have almost given up shooting neg
film because of it. Every neg film above 100 speed that I have used suffers
from terrible grain and noise... Even Tmax400CN scans with a course grain
and that is supposed to be a VERY fine grained film.

I just checked at a few sites where I saw scanner reviews to try and find
some better info for you. I remember reading a review of high end scanners
that tested them on negs and slides and found the Nikon scanners to be mid
pack for negs and best for slides.

Sorry but I can't find the review... I'll keep looking.
