I don't know about modern cameras, but earlier consumer cameras and
disposables had fixed apertures that changed if you put a flashcube on them,
or when you turned on the electronic flash unit. It was useful to shoot with
flash at the stadium if only to get the larger aperture.

It may still be an aid to use the flash in modern P&S cameras if it fixes
the shutter speed to particular speed rather than leaving the shutter open
for long periods. If the exposure is within a couple of stops, the printer
makes up the difference.

Best results can be had if you know what the camera will do in a particular
mode, but most people don't think about it. Most of those cameras these days
have an auto flash mode that kicks in based on available light. If the user
leaves the camera on 'auto' the flash will fire in the stadium. The bunny
company is selling batteries to the masses in a way they can understand.
Rather 'brilliant', don't you think? ;-)

Have you ever had occasion to take a shot precisely when another camera's
flash is firing? If eveyone in the stadium fired their cameras together,
imagine how well the field would be illuminated?
