[OM] Filter recommendations for a newbie

Hi,

I recently decided to re-commission my OM-2 and celebrated that fact with a
couple of "new" lenses. My other camera is a Nikon Pronea S APS camera.
It's good for point and shoot, but with the stock lens, it leaves a bit to
be desired.

Anyhow, I'm looking for what sorts of filters and brands you might recommend
to a newbie on the subject. I've determined I want to start with a
polariser and build my "library" from there. The catch is that I'd like to
be able to use the filters on both my OM-2 Zuiko lenses (which are a 28/2.8
and a 50/1.8) AND the Nikon lens (which has a 46mm mount). A sales guy at
the local camera store suggested the Cokin filter system. What are its
drawbacks besides its bulk? What are the general disadvantages with using
"generic" systems like this? Am I better off getting filters that exactly
fit the size of my lenses instead?

Oh, and is there any harm in using a circular polariser with my OM-2 since
the Nikon (with auto-focus) requires it?

Thanks!

-f
