The Maha charger(s) do "conditioning".  How important is that?

Yes, they are smart chargers changing to trickle charge automatically.
They do charge 1-4 cells (AA only) with 430 or 490 mA. Some types give
a higher current with 1-2 cells than with 3-4. They can be used
worldwide (100-240 V AC).
Olumpus does make both overnight and rapid chargers. They look roughly
the same, but type numbers are different.
