But never-ending threads on bears and other subjects are okay?
I am not a fan of Bill Gates, but Microsoft products are the single
best example of a family of products. Look at Word, PowerPoint,
Excel, etc. Once you know how to use one product, you have a
good idea of how to use the next product because design features
are shared between them. Are they perfect? Heck no, but I
challenge you to find a more cohesive family of products. Microsoft,
like other successful user-interface vendors, have realized how to
build successful user-interfaces through the use of such techniques
as usability testing. These are not my concepts but are those taught
in every human factors course.

But back to the original subject. For those who think I am wrong,
look at any successful website: Amazon, eBay, Eddie Bauer, L.L
Bean, etc. They ALL use dark, usually black, text on a white back-
ground for the most part to maximize contrast. When they deviate
from this formula, they employ pleasing colors like muted olive green
or wheat. They NEVER use obnoxious colors like saturated red,
royal blue, or bright yellow. They understand that their customers
range from 10-100. People who employ obnoxious colors are
usually young with great eyes. Bland may be boring to you, but it is
highly usable, and more importantly, highly successful.
