I thought Mike would respond to this one. Great pic. I love the Ferrari red.

For big lenses and racing photography they are a must. Below 250mm?
Unless you have a 250 f2 Zuiko I really don't see the point. I seldom
used mine prior to getting the 350/2.8. Many I know hand-hold with
300/2.8s, but the heft of the 350 is too much for me.

Here's an example of a panned shot off the monopod:
http://motorsportvisions.com/mh01/pages/mh01_007.htm (a lucky list
member has the only print of this image in existence to date).

I have an old Gitzo I bought new about 17 years ago. It works great,
but, it does not tilt flat and has typical Gitzo screw lock leg locks. I
would prefer one that has quick release leg locks and folds flat against
my body/lens for when I want to pick up and quickly move to the next
shooting location. With the Gitzo I have to remove the monopod from the
lens, stow it (or carry it) and then I'm on my way.

For smaller lenses, long shutter speeds, non-action work, they are kinda
worthless. For the track where tripods are frowned upon (and even not
allowed at most tracks on the track side of the fences) and heavy long
lenses they are essential.
