Bill ... Why won't your present computer work with the Sprintscan? Let
me guess: (1) Too slow for Photoshop (2) Not enough RAM for Photoshop
(3) No SCSI port for the scanner.

(1) Probably not much you can do except buy a new motherboard and CPU
or a new PC.

(2) Add more RAM to your present PC. Photoshop really likes plenty
of memory. 512K is great.

(3) Add a *good* PCI SCSI card to your present PC. I wouldn't buy
anything other than an Adaptec card. If you buy a new PC, only the
premium boxes come with SCSI ... and even then it may well NOT be a
premium SCSI card. Best to buy a lower cost PC and add the SCSI
card separately.

If you MUST buy a new PC, then there are many options in your price
range ... buy off the shelf or build from scratch is the first
question. The majority of off the shelf boxes are produced as
consumer items ... costs are cut wherever possible and they are
marketed with buzzwords. Often the apparently same card in an
off the shelf PC does NOT have the same performance as the "same"
card purchased from Fry's, PC Connection, etc. The OEM version
has subtle differences to lower the cost ... while the retail
version is a better performer and has full documentation and
full manufacturer support. If you buy the components (case,
motherboard, CPU, RAM, HDD, etc.) you can choose the exact
quality you desire for each component, and can often recycle
some of the hardware from your present PC. It doesn't take
much skill to assemble a new box from scratch, and if you
don't feel up to the task you can most certainly find a
friend to give you a hand. Building from scratch won't
save you much money, but dollar for dollar it will yield
a faster and more reliable machine.

Good luck,
