I don't have a reference, but I bet it's black nickel, which is very tough
and my preference. I did a pair of brake calipers for my old Porsche 914 in
1998 in blackened nickel. They looked really cool. I don't have the car
anymore though. The process I used was electroless nickel plating followed
by black oxide coating. There are DIY kits available at:
