Mark,
the T20 is often also too powerful but this is a non-problem for
either the T20 or T32 if you just add a diffuser over the flash head. I like
to use multiple layers of tissue paper taped over the flash head.
The close distance limit for autoflash is determined by how quickly
the flash
can be switched off after the light starts. There is some internal
electronic delay that limits this. This is why if you check the OM sif site
you will
see a minimum distance spec for (OTF) auto-flash as well as maximum. An easy
check to see if you are in trouble when doing macroflash is if the recycle
time becomes extremely short. Just add some more tissue over the flash until
you get reasonable mid range recycle time.
To calibrate the time just put the flash on manual and set it off using the
test switch
to get an idea of max flash output recycle time. Aim for say a quarter of
this time.
