OK. The Canon stuff convinces me.

OMG!

The f/22 shots are almost 3 stops beyond the theoretical diffraction limits for the 22 MP 5D Mark III.

And one can see the effect of diffraction, esp. in Roger's examples, below. It just isn't nearly as big as one might imagine from all the warnings we absorbed in our photographic youth. I believe the problem is one of scale, where we get no idea of the relative effects, on airy disks or whatever, of OOF vs diffraction.

What it does not show is a comparison with f/8 where the diffraction limits would not be violated.

That's why the link to Roger's article on LenRentals, with charts of MTF changes and a set of image illustrations. <http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/03/overcoming-my-fentekaphobia> Note that his corrected f22 example is using sharpening, etc., not deconvolution, which is likely why it's not as impressive at the Canon examples.

Nevertheless, it shows that one can regain significant detail with the post
processing for a specific lens.

OH my, did someone say that here before? :-)

I've obviously never seen this stuff. I don't own any Canon lenses and gave up using DPP the day it was installed. But this stuff was probably never there for the 5D anyhow.

No, it wasn't. And the only body/lens combo I've had that it applied to is 60D
and 10-22.

I'll have to pay more attention to DxO and its price.

I don't yet know if it is as effective from personal experience. Some testing is in order, but not yet got round to. I do have a better idea what to look for from the Canon examples.

They have regular sales. Moose Karma meant I bought the regular version for $100 and was upgraded free to Elite in their rejiggering of their feature/price mix. No everyone can count on that. Still, on sale it's not that expensive, and the deconvolution profiles are in both versions.

Trust the Moose
